Research At Glance

Research Vision

In its role as a research-oriented university, E-JUST will foster efforts in various areas of research whether basic, applied, or industry sponsored. The university is opened to multidisciplinary research, not only within its schools or departments, but also in its libraries, laboratories and research centers.

To ensure introducing effective and efficient research proposals that are relevant to the global trend and meet national priorities, E-JUST research achievements and quality are measured against national and international standards, whereas rigorous assessment and review will be central to advancing the university research programs and creative activities, as are participation and leadership in national and international academic disciplines.

The university also enjoys cooperation in research and creative activities with other agencies and consortium universities in Egypt and Japan, with the community, and with private enterprises in both countries.

Strategies of Basic Research

Directives of Basic Research could originate from a government specified research program or by a self-identified prospect. E-JUST Research Council plans for basic research programs with a maximum time horizon of 5 years. This is performed by considering the fields of strengths, expertise and skills of different staff members while taking the following factors into consideration:

• The various programs under way with the different partner/consortium universities,

• National requirements for basic research,

• The recommendations of the Research Council of E-JUST regarding the state-of-the-art techniques in basic research worldwide.

The criteria for formulating the basic research strategy are summarized as follows:

• Scientific merits and output

• Significance and feasibility of the research and operating plan

• Availability of a research environment with optimal conditions in terms of personnel, facilities and organization

• Success and potential in researcher training - the researchers must be of excellent academic quality and show long-term academic potential

• Potential for successfully securing the necessary research funds

• The sustainability of these funds over the expected lifetime of the research project

Strategies of Government Sponsored Applied Research

Government Sponsored Applied Research is conducted through various stakeholders. The following diagram depicts E-JUST strategy for linking university and industry through the contribution of various stakeholders in conducting government sponsored research.

The government is seen as the instigator of national research directives, while providing grants, and research funds to research institutions. Also it creates incentives for industry to cooperate with academia by fostering a healthy legislative environment conductive to a healthy cooperation between them. The flow of mutual benefits “spills over†to society through commercialization of the research results to the benefit of the research labs, the researcher, and industry in a model emulating the successfully applied principles of the Bayh-Dole now applied in the USA and Japan.

Strategies of Industry Sponsored Research

Strategies of industry sponsored research center around the following guidelines:

• Accurate identification of market trends and needs: Academia needs to be aware of market trends in the industry with which it is jointly performing research projects

• Quick idea to market cycle

• Potential for commercialization

• Encourage Japanese industry to outsource and conduct some of its research programs through E-JUST

• Broad geographic outlook: focus on members and stakeholders in the targeted sphere of activity of E-JUST

The main characteristics of industry sponsored research are:

• Short to medium term duration (1 to 3 years)

• Potential for commercialization

• Potential for helping industry in transitioning to knowledge based paradigms
