Abstract:

The objective of this project is to develop, design, manufacture and pilot testing of an innovative solar driven and High Performance (HP), Mechanical Vapor Compression (MVC) desalination technology with Nano Filtration Pre-Treatment (Solar-NF-MVC). The system electrical and thermal energies will be generated using integration of Photo Voltaic Thermal (PVT) and concentrated Solar Power (CSP) units. Nano-Filtration (NF) will be used for feed water pretreatment in order to; i- increases the Top Brine Temperature (TBT) to near 100 C and, therefore, design and operate the unit near atmospheric pressure. This will allow the use locally market available components, and reduce the size of evaporator, vapor compressor and vent ejector size, iii- eliminate or minimize the unit air in-leakage that reduces corrosion and allows the use of cheaper material. In addition, the proposed system will also develop and introduce novel ideas for enhancing the evaporation rate and the overall system performance. These include; a- new tubes shape and arrangement to suits more the falling thin film evaporation process, b- partial brine recycle, and c- Brine and product water energy recovery & storage, etc. The project target is to compete with conventional desalination technologies in its specific water production cost ($/m3).

Biography:

Professor of Desalination, Environmental Engineering Department, Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology(E-JUST), Borg Elarab City, Alexandria, Egypt. Prof. Hassan El-Banna filed 5 patents and published over one hundred and fifty papers in international journals/conferences in the area of desalination and energy technologies and other areas of expertise. He supervised over forty Ph.D. and M.Sc. students in Egypt, GCC countries and E-JUST Universities. Engaged (as PI, Co-PI and consultant) in over twenty funded projects (including Mega Projects) from different funding agencies either National or international in Egypt, Saudi Arabi, UAE, Korea and EU.
