Development and Production of Ultra-high Strength Composite-Based Sandwich Structure Steel/polymer for Automotive Applications
This project aims to develop and produce a new material for civilian vehicles. The project relates to the manufacture of armor shielding panels for the protection of vehicles from perforating projectiles and fragments projected during impact. The project objectives are focused around developing and manufacturing of a composite sandwich -based structure layers of an ultra-high strength material with nanostructure and polymer for armor shielding panels for the protection of vehicles against perforating projectiles and fragments projected during impact. Finite element numerical simulation coupled with smoothed particles hydrodynamic technique will be applied to predict the perforation of the developed materials. The methodology of the project is clearly divided into five main phases. Phase1 is Production of high strength steels. Phase 2 is processing of the produced material with ultra-fine/nano-grained structures. Phase 3 is manufacturing of a composite Panel structure. Phase 4 is Ballistic testing and Phase 5 is Modelling and simulation. The main expected outcome of the project is a novel material for resisting impact penetration and resisting penetration due to high thermal loading. Consequently, a material of a high positive impact on the civilian in our society can be raised.
