The Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology is Working on Manufacturing and Developing the Avigan Drug Used to Treat Coronavirus in Partnership with Major Local Pharmaceutical Companies
In light of the inclination of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to support scientific cooperation between Egyptian universities and the industrial sector to advance innovation, development, research and production, and within the framework of the relentless pursuit to face the repercussions of the Corona pandemic, researchers at the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology continue their efforts to galvanize the academic – industrial partnership aiming at reaching the best treatment regimens and providing medicines with the Ministry of Health and Population and the Pharmaceutical industry.
Dr. Sherif Fouad Hammad – Associate Professor in Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology, stated that as a consultant in the Quality Committee in the Egyptian Drug Authority, as well as as a consultant for the research and development sector at EVA Pharma, he and the researchers at the university and EVA are racing against time to develop and manufacture a drug similar to the Japanese drug Avigan, which has proven effective in curbing the spread of the new Coronavirus (COVID-19) in both Japan and China. These efforts are done in order to provide the effective drug to contribute to the treatment of the Coronavirus in accordance with the protocols of the Egyptian Ministry of Health.
Concurrently, the project of manufacturing the pharmaceutical material for a hydroxy chloroquine drug funded by the Science and Technology Development Fund to confront the pandemic was accepted in the industrial and scientific cooperation between the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology, Nour Elshark Chemical Factory and EVA Pharma.
Nonetheless, Prof. Ahmed El-Gohary, President of the University, indicated that the efforts of the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology will continue in order to maximize the outputs of scientific research and adapt them to serve the country in various fields. He continued to state that there are other projects related to the university’s contribution to fighting the Corona virus that professors and researchers are working on and will be presented to the designated authorities and announced soon.
