The Most Recent Innovation of Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology:A Robot to Enhance Mobility of Patients and Elderly
A scientific research team succeeded to innovate a robot that enhances the movement ability of patients with weak lower limbs due to age or any other diseases. This robot enables patients to do several functions like walking and sitting; also, it transfers paralyzed patients from bed to wheelchair. Moreover, Prof. Samy Assal, the project head, stated that the robot consists of two parts. The first one is the walking set; it is a mobile base used for walking-related and movement activities. The second part is the mechanical auxiliary mechanism that enables the activities related to rising from a seating position and elevating the patients. This mechanism depends on using an automatic parallel manipulator that has a high load capacity compared to its weight. Besides, it has a suitable working space to perform movement activities, and it has three degrees to support natural movement patterns.
On the other hand, Prof. Ahmed El-Gohary, President, applauded the efforts of the project team and their success to invent a robot with Egyptian hands. Furthermore, he assured that the university adopts the policy of making use of the Japanese model of “active learning based on experimentation and innovation” that is based on scientific research, practical application, and problem-solving methodology. He also added that the university provides inter-disciplinary academic specializations coping with all industrial, production, and service sectors. He also stated that Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology is a world-class university with a priority of conducting applied research contributing to community service.
